Who Is Senior IAS Officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey, India’s New Finance Secretary

The officer has served in various crucial departments of the Odisha govt and the Govt of India.

The central government, on September 7, named 1987 batch IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new finance secretary. He was appointed after Mr Somanathan was named as the Cabinet Secretary. Tuhin Kanta Pandey served several top administrative roles before getting appointed to this post. Let us know more about the officer in this article.

Tuhin Kanta Pandey is from the Odisha cadre of the 1987 batch. Before taking this charge he was the Secretary of the Departments of Public Enterprises (DPE) and Departments of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), two important departments under the Ministry of Finance.

Talking about his educational qualification, Tuhin Kanta Pandey holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA degree which he pursued from the United Kingdom. He has served in many various crucial departments of the Odisha government and the Government of India. Early in his career, he served as the Executive Director and Managing Director of the Odisha State Financial Corporation and the Odisha Small Industries Corporation Ltd.

Earlier, he was also appointed as the District Collector and District Magistrate of the Sambalpur district. He then worked as a Deputy Secretary under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Later, IAS Tuhin Kanta Pandey was transferred to the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). After returning from the United Nations posting, he served in several positions such as Special Secretary in the General Administration Department, Transport Commissioner, Health Secretary and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes. In 2009, the 1987-batch IAS officer was appointed as a Joint Secretary in the Planning Commission for a tenure of five years.

Before being appointed as Finance Secretary, he served DIPAM for five years. During his tenure, he oversaw key disinvestment programs aimed at maximising the value of central government sectors. The historic sale of Air India was one of the high-profile disinvestment programs under his leadership. He also briefly held additional charge as Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation in 2021. In his career, he has overseen the Odisha government’s financial department and has been associated with the Finance Ministry for a long time.
