Who Is S Sujith Das, The Suspended Kerala IPS Accused Of Smuggling Gold

Initially, Sujith Das pursued his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and started preparing for the civil services.

A 2015-batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre, S Sujith Das, was suspended from service on September 5, Thursday. The suspension happened following a series of allegations levelled against him by CPI(M)-backed independent legislator P V Anvar, earlier this week. This space articulates information about the Kerala-based IPS officer.

S Sujith Das’s home

The 2015 batch IPS officer lived in a Kerala village, Madukkani and finished his education at a government school located here. Sujith Das’s family’s financial position was weak and hence they could not afford a house of their own. Thus, he had to live in a rented accommodation. His mother B Ambujam used to teach in an Anganwadi and this was their only means of earning. When Sujit was selected for the Indian Police Service, his mother had retired from the Anganwadi. At that time B Ambujam had said that Sujit was brilliant in academics and she was confident that one day his son would pass the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam.

When S Sujith decided to pursue civil services

The 2015-batch IPS officer revealed in an interview that when he studied in a government school, the District Collector often drove his car to the DM (District Magistrate) bungalow via his school. Seeing this, S Sujith’s teachers often told him and his friends that if they studied well, they too could achieve this post one day. These words motivated Sujith to study well and become an IAS or IPS officer.

How did Sujith Das prepare for the UPSC Exams?

Initially, Sujith Das pursued his Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering and started preparing for the civil services. In one of the interviews, the 2015-batch IPS officer recalled that one of his classmates Abhiram G Shankar was selected in the UPSC exams. According to Sujith, this motivated him to try attempting the civil services exam in his academic career. Hence, he attempted this exam for the first time in 2012 but did not achieve success. After this, he attempted to write the exam twice in 2013 and 2014.

He was selected for the Indian Forest Services, Central Department in the Excise Zone and Inspector in the Customs Department. He joined the Customs Department and then, was selected, as the IPS officer for the Kerala Cadre in 2015. He had secured AIR 646 rank in the Civil Services Examination of the UPSC. Sujith also prepared for the Civil Services Examination by staying in Chennai for a few days.
