Who is Mamman Khan, Nuh Violence Accused Who Scored Widest Victory Margin in Haryana Elections?

In February this year, police had slapped charges under the stringent UAPA against Mamman Khan in the Nuh violence case. Khan has retained the Ferozepur Jhirka seat by a margin of 98,441 votes

Mamman Khan, sitting Congress MLA from Ferozepur Jhirka constituency, retained his seat by a whopping margin of 98,441 votes, the widest victory margin in Haryana elections 2024. Khan defeated BJP candidate Naseem Ahmed to retain his seat.

Who is Mamman Khan?

In February this year, police had slapped charges under the stringent UAPA against Mamman Khan in the Nuh violence case. The police had earlier accused Khan of inciting violence and being in contact with suspects involved in sharing provocative posts on social media. Besides, he also faces some other charges in the FIR.

Khan was last year arrested in connection with the Nuh violence case and granted bail by the court later.

Six people, including two home guards and a cleric, died in the clashes that erupted in Nuh after a procession of the VHP was attacked by mobs on July 31 last year and spread to adjoining areas, including Gurugram where an Imam was killed.

Setbacks for BJP in Nuh

Though the BJP made history with a third-straight term in the state, the party has faced a significant setback in Nuh district, where it lost all three Assembly constituencies — Nuh, Ferozepur Jhirka, and Punahana. All three constituencies have a sizeable Muslim population.

In a stunning political twist, the BJP defied all exit poll predictions by clinching a decisive victory in the Haryana Assembly elections. The party bagged 48 seats in the 90-member Assembly, adding eight seats to its 2019 tally. The Congress won 37 seats, while the INLD managed two and three seats went to the Independents.

The BJP secured the biggest victory margins in Gurgaon and Badshahpur Assembly constituencies in the state. The party had fielded Mukesh Sharma from Gurgaon, who won by a substantial margin of 68,045 votes, defeating Independent candidate and BJP rebel Naveen Goyal.

BJP’s Rao Narbir Singh also registered a landslide victory from Badshahpur where he won by a margin of 60,705 votes defeating Congress’ Vardhan Yadav.

Among the prominent candidates, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, senior Congress leader and former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, wrestler-turned politician Vinesh Phogat, Aditya Surjewala and Independent candidate Savitri Jindal won the elections.

Some of the stalwart leaders who faced defeat in this Assembly election include outgoing speaker and BJP candidate Gian Chand Gupta, INLD’s Abhay Singh Chautala, Haryana Lokhit Party’s Gopal Goyal Kanda and BJP’s OP Dhankhar.
