Lakhs of applications are received for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam every year. Many candidates become IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS by passing this exam. Do you know what the difference is between these posts? Today, let us know what the difference is between IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS.
1. IPS (Indian Police Services):
The officers selected in the Indian Police Service (IPS) are called IPS officers. IPS officers are also equivalent to IAS in UPSC Civil Services. IPS officers are either posted in the police headquarters or work as Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district. Their responsibility is to maintain law and order in the district. Apart from this, it is also their responsibility to prevent crime and ensure the safety of local people. Additionally, they are used by Indian intelligence agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB), Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
2. IFS (Indian Foreign Services):
The Indian Foreign Service is in charge of the country’s foreign affairs. Employees of the Indian Foreign Services are sent by the Indian government to serve in diplomatic missions and to represent India in foreign organisations. The job of IFS officers is to represent India at the international level. They are posted as ambassadors of India in various countries and handle India’s foreign relations. To become an IFS officer, it is necessary to have good knowledge of English, as they have to interact with diplomats and ambassadors of other countries.
3. IRS (Indian Revenue Services):
Candidates selected in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) work in the Revenue Department under the Ministry of Finance. IRS officers also work in the Income Tax and Customs Department, where they keep accounts of the country’s revenue. IRS officers also make financial policies.
4. IAS (Indian Administrative Services):
Candidates who score well in the civil services exam of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) are selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). However, some candidates want to become IPS or IFS, due to which, when they leave, lower-ranked candidates get the IAS post. IAS officers look after the administrative arrangements. They are posted in the secretariat of the state or central government or they are made the District Magistrate (DM) of the district, which is also called the District Magistrate. The DM is the head of the district, and revenue, administrative, and development works are under him. Many times, he also takes decisions related to law and order along with the SP (Superintendent of Police).
