Unnao Woman Sets Herself on Fire on Lucknow Streets, Suffers 90% Burns; Police Probe On

DCP Central Raveena Tyagi said that the woman appears to have been involved in a family dispute based on initial findings.

A 30-year-old woman suffered severe burns after setting herself on fire near Kalidas Marg in the Gautampalli police station area of Lucknow on Tuesday, August 6. The incident caused immediate commotion at the scene. Local police quickly intervened to extinguish the flames and subsequently transported the woman to the civil hospital. Reports indicate that she has suffered 90 percent burns. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow Central) Raveena Tyagi said that the woman, a resident of Purva in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, appears to have been involved in a family dispute based on initial findings. “A woman attempted to immolate herself by pouring flammable liquid on her near Vikramaditya Marg in the Gautam Palli police station limits,” PTI reported the official as saying.

The woman, identified as Anjali Jatav, had previously filed a case against her husband and other family members at the Purva police station in Unnao.

SP Unnao Siddharth Shankar Meena stated that the woman had been distressed due to issues with her husband and family members. On August 2, she filed a case of dowry harassment against her in-laws. Following this, on August 5, the police arrested her husband and brother-in-law. The investigation into other aspects of the case is ongoing.
