A Ugandan national raised suspicion on board a Delhi bound flight after refusing food and water. He admitted to his crime soon after landing and was arrested after nine days
A foreign national of Ugandan origin was arrested from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on charges of smuggling drugs after he raised suspicion by refusing to eat anything or drink water on board a flight from Sharjah. He was arrested after nine days of interrogation.
The G9-463 flight departed from Sharjah at around 11.15 pm. After takeoff, the airhostess started distributing food to the passengers as usual. However, this passenger refused to take food. This made the airhostess suspicious.
When the airhostess offered water to the passenger, he refused. During this, the airhostess did not like the passenger’s gesture and sensed something wrong. The airhostess immediately informed the captain of the plane about him and the captain in turn informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
On receiving the information, the ATC shared it with the Customs Preventive Team. When the flight landed at around 4:30 am at Delhi, the passenger was taken into custody who admitted during interrogation that he had inhaled capsules of drugs.
Following this, the accused was admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. About 13 drug capsules were removed from his stomach under the supervision of doctors.
On examination of the capsules, 357 grams of cocaine worth Rs 5.36 crore was recovered from them. It took about nine days for the customs officials and doctors of Safdarjung Hospital to make this recovery.
