This Kerala School Volunteers Are Selling Lotions To Raise Funds For Wayanad Flood Victims

Students are raising funds for the construction of houses of flood-affected people.

After the catastrophic floods and landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, many celebrities stepped up to help out people in these dire times. Apart from them, local people too have been busy rescuing and offering relief to those rescued. Recently, NSS volunteers set a unique example in raising funds to build houses for the displaced. The NSS volunteers of Kilimanoor Raja Ravi Varma Boys Vocational Higher Secondary School have been raising funds for the construction of houses for the flood-affected people of Wayanad. Instead of directly collecting money from the local residents or family members, the students have decided to make and sell lotions in the market.

Each volunteer has been assigned a specific number of lotion bottles to sell. The money raised through the sale would be all handed over to the NSS fund. The fund will then contribute to the construction of about 150 houses in Wayanad. A two-day camp is also being set up at the school for this purpose. The lotion is being made at the premises of the school and the initial production batch consisted of 300 bottles.

Depending on the demand, the supply will be later increased. The school’s principal, Nizam, is providing all the possible support to the students. As part of the camp, a free Ayurveda camp was organised within the school. Selling lotion is not the only way they are trying to raise funds. As a part of the efforts, students are organising a food fest. The fundraising activities for the relief work are being conducted under the supervision of Sunitha, a teacher and the NSS coordinator at the school.

The Wayanad landslides occurred in the wee hours of July 30. It was a series of landslides that took place in Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Vellarimala villages in Meppadi panchayat, Vythiri taluk in Wayanad district, Kerala. The landslides were the result of torrential rains that caused the sides of the hills to collapse. The disaster is one of the deadliest in the history of the state. About 420 fatalities were reported, 397 injuries and more than 118 people missing.

Many government agencies such as the armed forces, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and rescue services, and forest and wildlife authorities launched a large-scale rescue and relief mission.
