The Science And Beliefs Behind Not Having Meat During Shravana

Hundreds of years ago sages and saints used to travel the work to spread the teachings of the Vedas.

The month of Shravana is considered very sacred among the Hindus. Devotees of Lord Shiva perform special rituals to worship him. People keep fast with great devotion to get the blessing of Lord Shiva. There are several other Hindu festivals like Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan and Nag Panchami are set to be celebrated in this month. Each had of this month is regarded as special. Particularly, Mondays and Fridays are observed with great devotion by the people.

Many people wonder why it is advised not to consume meat during the Shravana month. There are scientific reasons for this. The month of Shravana mainly falls during the rainy season. This leads to higher humidity levels, which increases the chances of chickens and other animals contracting diseases. Consuming such meat can adversely affect human health, according to reports. Additionally, during the rainy season, the consumption of meat can cause digestive issues. Hence, it is suggested to avoid it.

In today’s era, people might not be familiar with the rules and rituals of this sacred month. The rituals followed during Shravana month originate from the ancient age. Hundreds of years ago sages and saints used to travel the work to spread the teachings of the Vedas. However, during this month, they used to stay in one place due to the rainy season. They used to preach the teachings of the Vedas to the locals of the place.

The local people who stayed near those areas used to visit the saints to take lessons. The people who used to visit the saints and sages avoided consuming meat for the whole month. Since there were no modern conveniences back then, sages and saints would give their teachings in one place. Nowadays, with all the facilities available, people observe these practices and rituals in nearby temples. Priest Rudrabatla Srikanth mentioned that due to these reasons, this month is known as Shravana month.
