The Creepy History Of 17th Century ‘Cursed’ Pub Chair In UK That Still Haunts Many

In the quiet village of Thirsk in Yorkshire, UK, a chair with a dark history has turned the area into a popular haunted spot. The chair is linked to Thomas Busby, a 17th century murderer, who was executed in 1702. Locals believe Busby’s ghost still haunts the site, which has now become an Indian restaurant. The cursed chair, blamed for several mysterious deaths, was donated to the Thirsk Museum under the strict rule that no one should sit on it again. Wade Radford, who visited the infamous Busby Stoop as a boy in 2008, had documented the place with cheap cameras, joined by his friends. Years later, he recently decided to revisit the sight.

Speaking about his time, Radford told Metro, “It wasn’t your typical pub, there was a sign hanging outside with the cursed chair and a noose hanging outside, but that’s all gone. I thought, I have all this stuff from nearly 20 years ago, it’s such a great story and so many cool things happened while I was there, I was compelled to have a trip down memory lane. The legend of how the chair came to be is such a fascinating tale and a real part of Yorkshire legacy. My feeling of disappointment over how it looks now was so strong and unexpected, I felt compelled to do something about it. I got engulfed in writing the book about the history and what we found.”

Wade Radford shared that they had never worked with a psychic before, but they met one in a pub and invited her to join their visit to the Busby Stoop. They filmed their investigation with basic equipment, including a tape camera and were thrilled to capture the first clear audio of Thomas’ voice. During their session, while doing automatic writing with the medium, one of them screamed, saying she heard something in her ear. When they reviewed the tape, they found a long “I” on the recording and noticed that the medium had been writing the same word.

Seeing the current state of the former Busby Stoop, Radford felt someone needed to preserve this piece of local history. The investigator mentioned that he has been working on restoring old videos and came across a sketch of Thomas Busby that the psychic had drawn, which was hidden at the bottom of a box. Radford pointed out that while some might think the voice of Thomas Busby in the restored clip was added later, it was actually recorded with basic equipment, a handheld video camera with a built-in microphone.

He explained that only he and three women were present during the filming and since the camera was focused on him and he wasn’t speaking, the clear voice on the tape must have been picked up very close to the microphone. The reaction of the person who heard the voice was also very frightening for them.
