The person in question is Raju Joseph, a resident of M Pudupatti village near Musiri in the Trichy district of Tamil Nadu. He has been successfully running his donkey farm for over six years.
According to Local18, Raju initially operated a farm with goats, cows and hens. However, over time, he decided to start a donkey farm when the number of donkeys in Tamil Nadu fell below a thousand. He realised that, in addition to goats, cows and hens, endangered species also need attention.
Joseph faced several hurdles initially, as there were only a few old or sick native donkeys available. Despite starting with just five or six donkeys, his business has grown to become a model for others. Speaking about his venture, Raju Joseph said that as a lawyer, he has always had a deep interest in farming, especially goats, cows and chickens.
Initially, he ran a farm with these animals, but after some time, he considered the idea of running a donkey farm. Although people mocked him, questioning how raising donkeys could be a viable livelihood, he ignored the criticisms and focused on his goal. Today, those same people admire his success.
Unlike others, he not only sells donkey milk but also produces various products from it, earning lakhs of rupees monthly. He also shared his knowledge with others interested in setting up their donkey farms.
Raju Joseph produces various cosmetic products from donkey milk at his farm. He makes thailam, a medicinal oil from donkey hair, and sambrani, a fragrant incense from donkey dung. These products are sold both in person and online, generating significant income. Everything is made naturally, and many customers eagerly purchase his products.
Recognising the decline in the donkey population, Joseph actively encourages young people to get involved in this business. He conducts online classes on donkey farming, benefiting many youths. These classes cover how to start a donkey farm, secure loans and properly care for donkeys. His efforts aim to revive the declining donkey population. Today, Raju Joseph owns 50 donkeys and earns Rs 3.5 lakh a month. He has become an inspiration for many young people to follow in his footsteps.
