The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) issued a directive to raise electricity tariffs across various consumer categories in the state, effective July 1, 2024. The decision, aimed at addressing rising operational costs, mandates an average increase of 4.38 percent from current rates.
New Tariff Structure:
Residential Consumers:
- For consumption between 0 to 400 units: Increased from Rs 4.60 to Rs 4.80 per unit.
- 401 to 500 units: Increased from Rs 6.15 to Rs 6.45 per unit.
- 501 to 600 units: Increased from Rs 8.15 to Rs 8.55 per unit.
- 601 to 800 units: Increased from Rs 9.20 to Rs 9.65 per unit.
- Above 800 units: Increased from Rs 10.20 to Rs 10.70 per unit. Users consuming over 1000 units will be charged Rs 11.80 per unit.
Commercial Consumers:
- Above 50 units: Increased from Rs 9.70 to Rs 10.15 per unit.
Government and Institutional Consumers:
- Government and government-aided educational institutions, hospitals, and flats: Increased from Rs 8.15 to Rs 8.55 per unit.
- Railway and army quarters: Increased from Rs 8.15 to Rs 8.55 per unit.
- Private educational institutions: Increased from Rs 8.70 to Rs 9.10 per unit.
Special Categories:
- Places of worship (up to 120 units): Increased from Rs 5.90 to Rs 6.20 per unit.
- Above 120 units: Increased from Rs 7.15 to Rs 7.50 per unit.
- Small and micro enterprises (up to 500 units): Increased from Rs 4.60 to Rs 4.80 per unit.
- Power looms: Increased from Rs 7.65 to Rs 8.00 per unit.
Implementation and Exemptions:
- The TNERC has confirmed that the tariff adjustments will be implemented starting July 1, 2024.
- Notably, approximately one crore low-consumption households will see no changes in their electricity bills.
- The existing benefits, including 100 units of free electricity for houses and cottages, as well as total exemptions from paying Rs 20 to Rs 50 for two months, will remain unaffected.
- Subsidies for agriculture, handloom, power loom sectors, places of worship, and low voltage industries will continue as before, according to the Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation.
