RG Kar Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh, Kolkata Cop Sent to CBI Custody Till September 17 | Updates

Former Principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and SHO Abhijit Mondal will be produced in the court today.

Former Principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal, who were arrested in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, have been sent to the CBI custody till September 17.

In the case filed against both, the probe agency has charged them for the delay in filing the FIR and tampering with evidence in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the state-run health facility on August 9.

In a separate case related to the alleged financial irregularities in the RG Kar hospital, Ghosh was already under CBI custody and underwent a polygraph test.

It comes amid the protest by the junior doctors outside the West Bengal Health Department headquarters in Kolkata that entered its sixth day on Sunday. The agitating doctors are still standing firm on their demand seeking the removal of top government officials, top police officers, and justice for the trainee doctor.

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The autopsy report suggested that she was brutally raped before being murdered. During the initial probe, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who admitted to the crime.

Sandip Ghosh, Abhijit Mondal Produced In Court

Ex-RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, and Tala PS officer-in-charge were produced in Kolkata court in connection with medic’s rape-murder case on Sunday. The probe agency is expected seek their custody for further probe.

During the hearing, the CBI claimed that there was a communication between Ghosh and Mondal and there are chances of nexus. “It’s important to probe the matter as a larger conspiracy might be there,” the probe agency said. It further claimed that Mondal visited the crime spot at 11 AM and the FIR was lodged at 11 PM, suggesting efforts made to tamper with evidence and misleading the case.

CBI Summons 4 Kolkata Cops

After the arrest of the Tala Police Station SHO Abhijit Mondal, the CBI summoned four Kolkata Police officers including two sub-inspectors for questioning in the RG Kar rape and murder case.

Meanwhile, several people staged a massive protest outside the CBI office here at CGO Complex on Sunday when the officers were taking Abhijit Mondal, the Tala Police Station officer-in-charge for a customary medical examination.

The agitators gathered outside the CGO Complex, carrying placards and posters, and shouted slogans demanding justice for the woman doctor and criticising the police for its handling of the investigation before the CBI took over the case.

Doctors Brave To Protest Near Swasthya Bhavan

Junior doctors continued their sit-in protest for the sixth consecutive day in front of Swasthya Bhavan near the Salt Lake area on Sunday.

“We are steadfast in our resolve to seek justice for our sister, no matter the adversity. We have spent nights on the streets in harsh conditions and inclement weather despite some of us not feeling well,” an agitating junior medic was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Kolkata Cop Abhijit Mondal Taken to Court

Tala Police Station In-Charge Abhijit Mondal, who was arrested by the CBI yesterday in connection with the RG Kar rape and murder case, was taken to the court on Sunday.

He was arrested after he failed to answer the probe agency’s questions. The probe agency charged him with the destruction of evidence and also accused him of delay in lodging the FIR.

Doctors to Hold Mega Protest Rally

Amid the deadlock between the protesting junior doctors and the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, the medics associated with the state-run health facilities have called for a mega rally from Saltlake Central Park to State Health Department headquarters today, September, 15.

It comes after another round of much-anticipated talks between the agitating doctors and the state government failed to take place on Saturday. The delegation of doctors went to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat and had to return without the meeting taking place.

The junior doctors requested live streaming of the meeting or be allowed to video-graph the proceedings. The state government rejected the proposal, saying the videography would be done by the government only.

Mamata Reaches Protest Site Amid Talks Deadlock

Banerjee on Sunday afternoon made a surprise visit outside the Swasthya Bhavan- the Health Department headquarters- in Saltlake where junior doctors have been protesting for the last six days demanding justice for the young trainee doctor.

The Chief Minister assured the protesting doctors that their demands would be addressed, asking them to come for talks.

“I have spent sleepless nights as you have been protesting on the road amid rain. I assure you that I will study your demands, take action if someone is found guilty,” Banerjee told the protesting doctors.
