Often the mobile network stops working in hilly areas, at high altitudes and inside tunnels. In this technological era, the disturbance in making calls or using the internet due to the absence of a network can pose a big problem for commuters. The government is now planning to solve this problem through mobile boosters at Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.
As per reports, the Public Works Department (PWD) plans to install mobile boosters in the underground transit corridor near Pragati Maidan in the country’s capital Delhi. It is done to provide passengers with better mobile network coverage inside the tunnel.
PWD officials have confirmed that efforts are being made to install mobile boosters in the underground tunnel. No mobile network in the tunnel remains a big problem for commuters. This was first reported in 2022.
After this problem came to light, PWD is trying to install a booster inside the tunnel. This effort is part of the transit corridor developed under the Pragati Maidan redevelopment project. This 6-lane, 1.36 km long tunnel directly connects to Bharat Mandapam. It is the venue for many VIP government events and meetings, making a stable mobile connection essential.
This tunnel starts from Purana Qila Road. It is connected to India Gate Circle and ends at Ring Road. Out of the 6 underpasses, five are on Mathura Road, the sixth is on the Ring Road. The tunnel is equipped with CCTV cameras while the operation of LED screens, signage and exit control is managed digitally. The tunnel and five underpasses were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2022. The construction work on the Bhairon Marg underpass is still underway.
Earlier, the PWD invited bids from the telecom companies to install network boosters in the 500-metre section where call drops usually occur. As per the PWD, the work is being revived, the space will be allocated to a bidder who will provide connectivity for all network providers. PWD has taken inspiration from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has successfully resolved connectivity issues at its underground stations.
