A Norwegian passenger boarded two planes at Munich Airport without a valid ticket, authorities said Tuesday. Although his initial attempt at deceit was swiftly exposed, he managed to pull off the same ruse just one day later and boarded an aircraft bound for Sweden. On August 4, the 39-year-old succeeded in tricking security personnel at the largest hub in Bavaria for the first time.
Passengers typically scan their boarding tickets at an automated gate, but according to the German daily Bild, the man managed to go through without one by standing close to another passenger. In addition, he got on a Lufthansa flight bound for Hamburg in northern Germany by eluding airline employees at the gate.
The man’s deceit was exposed as the plane was completely reserved and he had no seat. He was charged after being handed over to the police, but he was soon freed and went back to the airport the next day.
Sebastian Pinta, a police spokesperson, informed the news outlet that he used the same method to board an unfulfilled aircraft to Stockholm secretly. This time, he was on board Lufthansa flight LH2418 as the plane took off, as per AFP. Staff at the airport in Stockholm, Sweden, saw that he was eager to go back to Munich when he landed. He was subsequently handed over to police.
Authorities discovered a 10-centimeter-bladed knife with him. According to One Mile at a Time, he is now being prosecuted in Germany for fare evasion and trespassing. Sebastian Pinta underlined that the individual posed no threat. According to the spokesperson, the man is currently under investigation for transit fraud and unauthorised admission.
According to Munich Airport, investigations are underway to find out how the individual evaded security. “It will take some time to clarify the incident,” the airport representative stated, according to One Mile at a Time. The spokesperson added that they are looking into how the sneaky traveler managed to get past the security check and the automated boarding pass check. In addition, the airline, which is in charge of the check, is verifying the boarding pass check at the boarding gates.
