Intermittent rain for more than eight hours in Mumbai threw life out of gear on Wednesday, prompting a ‘Red Alert’ from the authorities.
The heavy downpour caused waterlogged roads in the financial capital, leading to massive traffic jams on Western Express Highway and other areas. Movements of flights have been affected and Mumbai’s lifeline– local trains– are running at a cautious speed.
The Met department predicted “extremely heavy rainfall”. The weather department has also issued a red alert for Palghar and Nashik and an orange alert for Thane, Raigad, and Pune for Thursday.
Several areas of the city experienced over 200 mm of rainfall within a span of five hours, from 5 PM to 10 PM on Wednesday, according to data from the civic body’s automatic weather stations. Powai recorded 234 mm of rain, Mankhurd saw 276 mm, Ghatkopar received 259 mm, and Vikhroli had 186 mm of rainfall.
