Mizoram Introduces Bilingual Textbooks For Classes 9, 10, and 11; Becomes First State To Do So

The Mizoram govt had earlier introduced bilingual textbooks for classes 9 and 10 marking it as the first state in India to adopt this approach.

The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) has introduced bilingual textbooks for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics for class 11. The textbooks are printed in Mizoram and come with ISBNs. The new class 11 bilingual physics textbook has 384 pages, priced at Rs 300, biology has 406 pages, priced at Rs 250, chemistry has 517 pages, priced at Rs 300, and mathematics has 205 pages, priced at Rs 250. The first editions were published with 1000 copies each of physics, chemistry, and biology, and 500 copies of mathematics. These textbooks are now available through MBSE book dealers.

It is to be noted that the Mizoram govt had earlier introduced bilingual textbooks for classes 9 and 10 marking it as the first state in India to adopt this approach. The project was started by the MBSE in 2022 and the first implementation took place in the 2023-2024 academic session, with students in classes 9 and 10 using these bilingual textbooks. The MBSE is now working on creating bilingual textbooks for class 12 science and mathematics.

The new bilingual textbooks for class 11 were released by School Education Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana at the Directorate of School Education Conference Hall. During the event, Dr. Vanlalthlana highlighted that the initiative will help students understand complex subjects like science and mathematics in their native Mizo language. He said that he is happy for the students that they now can study tough subjects in their native language, which will help them in better understanding. “Mizoram has reached a new era,” he said.

Dr. Vanlalthlana also extended his gratitude to everyone involved in the project’s success, including the opposition leader and former Education Minister, who initiated the project. He noted that this initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recommends the introduction of bilingual textbooks, particularly in mathematics and science.

Experts from colleges and higher secondary schools were selected to write the textbooks, with progress report workshops which were held 16 times. Subject coordinators, writers, peer reviewers, and proofreaders have worked tirelessly to ensure the project’s success, Dr. Vanlalthlana said.
