India Post Releases Cover-Postcard Of ‘World Heritage’ Santiniketan

The Indian Postal Department officially inaugurated eight postage stamps at the Visva-Bharati's Lipika Theatre.

Santiniketan was recently recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This time, the Indian Postal Department of the Ministry of Communications officially inaugurated eight postage stamps at the Visva-Bharati’s Lipika Theatre in Santiniketan. A joint programme of Visva Bharati University and the Indian Postal Department featured photographs of the historical buildings of Santiniketan and important heritage sites.

Professor Amar Pal, Kolkata Regional Postmaster General Ashok Kumar, and Chief Heritage Committee Coordinator Adhikarik Sathi Gangopadhyay officially inaugurated the stamps on Monday. Also, the event was attended by Public Relations Officer Atig Ghosh, students of Path Bhavan and Sangeet Bhavan, postal department staff, and others.

In 2022, in memory of Rabindranath Tagore, a special museum was made at the Santiniketan Post Office. It was named Chaya Beethi where all stamps of Rabindranath Tagore are collected. The stamps of that collection are displayed in the Lipika Theatre. Students and alumni of Visva Bharati participated in the postage stamp exhibitions and also collected postage stamps.

Postmaster General Kolkata Regional Ashok Kumar said, “To honour Rabindranath and the World Heritage Site, the Indian Postal Department has launched 8 postage stamps with images of historical buildings. Wherever a letter goes from Santiniketan, there will be a special World Heritage stamp.”

Because of Rabindranath Tagore’s global recognition, 34 countries have released commemorative postage stamps, postage stamp seatlets, opening envelopes, special envelopes, postcards, and special seals about him. The first postage stamp featuring Rabindranath Tagore was issued from India on October 1, 1952. The price of which was 12 annas.

On the other hand, Indian Postal Department Chief Post Master General Neeraj Kumar said, “Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and Visva-Bharati are of immense importance. That’s why the Indian Postal Department has released special covers, postcards and stamps. The postal department wants to spread the ideals of Kabiguru further.”
