‘Increasing Economic Security For All Americans Top Priority’: Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris, the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party in the United States, has prominently placed the middle class in her election issue. She has announced several steps to provide relief to the middle-class people, especially the salaried people. She also targeted her opponent and Republican Party candidate Donald Trump and said that his agenda is still running on the old track.

About 50 per cent of the total population in the US comes from the middle class. Kamala Harris has tried to woo a large voter group by raising the issues of the middle class.

While presenting her economic policy, the Democratic candidate said that millions of people are dreaming of buying their own house for the first time. Such people will be helped and there will be an emphasis on reducing taxes as well if she comes to power. Along with this, their government will also focus on reducing the prices of groceries and other essential items. Facilities like healthcare and child tax credits will be expanded so that the middle class can get full benefits from them.

The recent inflation data released in the US has brought relief after about three and a half years when the consumer inflation rate went below 3 per cent. However the inflation rate of other food products, including groceries, is still high, and their prices are even higher than the situation before the Corona epidemic. This is the biggest concern of Kamala because it is directly and most affected by the middle class.

In her economic vision, Kamala Harris emphasised fulfilling the dream of owning a house for the middle class. She said that building your own house in this country is a very difficult task. They will keep an eye on the prices of housing and medicines and make them affordable for the common man. Instructions have been given to the officials to keep an eye on the prices of groceries, and orders have also been given to impose penalties on the violators.

In a post on X, Kamala Harris wrote, “I grew up in a middle-class household. For most of my childhood, we were renters. When I’m elected President, I will make it a top priority to bring down costs, and increase economic security for all Americans.”

If the income of the middle class in the United States is compared with that of Indians, then this difference is quite shocking. According to the Pew Research Center, before the Corona period, 50 per cent of Americans were in the middle class. Then the annual income of a middle-class family ranged from Rs 28 lakh to Rs 86 lakh. 33 per cent of this income goes to pay the EMI or rent on the house. At the same time, according to the report of Home Credit India, in 2024, a middle-class Indian living in a metro city will earn Rs 35 thousand every month, i.e. Rs 4.20 lakh annually.
