In West Bengal’s Malda, Fisherman Catches Giant-sized Rare Snakehead Fish

There are a few snakehead fish species that are also on the verge of extinction.

There are several animals that are on the brink of extinction or have already gone extinct. The word extinction means the death of all members of a species of plants, animals, or other organisms. There are a few snakehead fish species that are also on the verge of extinction. Recently, a snakehead fish was rescued from a pond in West Bengal’s Malda town. The fish was huge in size, and its body was striped with a deep black colour. It is not commonly seen in the area. The fish is also known as Gojar, and is usually found in Bangladesh. It was found at Sagardighi Fish Breeding Center in Malda. The weight of the fish was about 10 kg. Sagardighi Fish Breeding Center also has various species of fish. Giant fish are not commonly found here. Small fish of this species are occasionally found in this centre.

This species of fish is now on the verge of extinction. It is not cultivated on a large scale, but the price is quite good in the market due to their excellent-tasting flesh and lack of fine bones. Fishermen said that it is currently sold in the market at Rs 400 to 500 per kg.

Channa Marulius or Bullseye snakehead has been assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2009. The fish have dorsal and anal fins, which are long, and there are no spines or rays. These fish are native to most of Southeast Asia. They are highly adaptable and can tolerate a wide range of water conditions. The lifespan of the fish varies depending on various factors, like environmental conditions and fishing pressure. These typically have a lifespan of around 10 to 15 years in their native habitats.
