Near the Malayalam School on Kanyakumari's Main Road, a group of friends has set up a fridge and a wardrobe under an initiative titled “Unavay Uravay”.
Food, clothing, and shelter are the three necessities of human life. Many hardworking individuals endure various hardships daily, striving to meet these essential needs. However, in many regions, numerous people still face severe challenges due to a lack of fundamental resources like food and clothing.
At the popular tourist destination of Kanyakumari, many poor and underprivileged people visit to see the sights. Near the Malayalam School on Kanyakumari’s Main Road, a group called Kumari Friends has set up a fridge and a wardrobe under an initiative titled “Unavay Uravay” (Food and Connection). These facilities contain various items such as clothes, vegetables, drinking water, and other essential goods.
People are encouraged to donate any surplus food, clothing, or other necessities they may have. Through this initiative, those in need, particularly people without food or clothing, can access these resources.
Senthil, a member of the Unavay Uravay initiative, said, “We are part of a group of friends in Kanyakumari. We launched this initiative to help those in the coastal areas of Kanyakumari who lack basic necessities like food and clothing.”
“We have received a lot of support from the public, and these contributions are reaching those in need. The food and clothing placed here are often used up on the same day. We see this as a small effort on our part to help those in need,” he added.
In Tamil Nadu, around 14.6 lakh people were provided with free food in relief camps, and approximately 1.28 lakh people were given food in Amma Unavagams due to the heavy rains on October 16 and 17.
According to a press release from the Tamil Nadu government, the state’s chief minister had announced that, due to the red alert issued, people would be provided with free food at Amma Unavagams on October 16 and 17. This announcement was a significant help for many poor individuals who were unable to work due to the heavy rains.
On October 16, Amma Unavagams served idli and pongal to the public in the morning, followed by various mixed rice dishes in the afternoon. A total of 78,557 people benefited from this free food distribution at Amma Unavagams, and about 29,319 poor individuals were served chapatis in the evening. Many of those who received the food expressed their gratitude for the chief minister’s efforts to provide free meals during the difficult weather conditions.
