IIM Sambalpur Welcomes Record 76% Women, 60% Non-Engineers in 10th MBA Batch

In the non-engineers category, 19% of the students are from science and commerce backgrounds, while 12.5% are from management and 4% from the arts backgrounds

IIM Sambalpur has started the 10th batch of the flagship MBA programme with three times more women students. Of the total 320 students, the 2024-26 cohort witnessed 244 (76 per cent) women students and 76 (24 per cent) men.

Moreover, there was a significant rise in the percentage of non-engineers with 60 per cent (194 students). Only 40 per cent of the registered students were from engineering fields, as many as 126 students. In the non-engineers category, 19 per cent of the students are from science and commerce backgrounds, while 12.5 per cent are from management and 4 per cent from the arts backgrounds. Among the total students, 46 per cent (146) have prior work experience, whereas 54 per cent (174) are freshers.

A number of prominent figures from the industry graced the inaugural event of the 2024–26 batch, including Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, director of IIM Sambalpur, who gave the welcome note, and Subrat Tripathy, president of Adani Group’s business development, who served as the keynote speaker. During the inaugural event, professors and students were also in attendance.

Prof Mahadeo Jaiswal, director of IIM Sambalpur, emphasised the significance of gender diversity, stating, ““Before 2017, the percentage of women students in MBA classes across IIMs was less than 11%, including IIM Sambalpur. In 2017, we made a bold decision to implement a policy that provided an additional 5 per cent cut off reduction for female candidates when calling for interviews and then creating a common merit list.” This effort created history by reaching 50 per cent female enrollment starting in 2017, a model that has now been emulated by all IIMs, Jaiswal added.
