Just like every other zoo, each animal has its separate way of life which includes how they are taken care of. However, Indira Gandhi Zoological Park takes utmost care to provide a unique lifestyle to the elephants in the zoo.

At the Visakhapatnam Zoo, the elephants are given proper care and looked after by their caretaker. From the time the jumbos wake up in the morning till they go to sleep at night, the caretaker makes sure they get the best care. They ensure that the elephants receive food from time to time, get enough time to walk around and then take a rest. The first thing the caretakers do as soon as they arrive at the zoo in the morning is to check up on the elephants and inspect the entire area where they walk around.

In an interview with Local18, the caretakers explained their routine with the elephants. As soon as they wake up, they are brushed. At 10 am they are given about five kilograms of bran to eat followed by a leisure stroll in the outdoor enclosure for them to just roam and relax. At 11 am, they are fed once again and this time with ragi porridge. The jumbos are given a bath at noon and then fed with jaggery and grass. At 4 pm, they are once again brushed, given a good bath and brought inside.

In case, the biggest land animals experience any kind of health problems, then a veterinarian doctor is immediately called for a medical checkup. The Visakhapatnam Zoo is currently home to four elephants- two males named Raju and Krishna and two females named Saraswati and Lakshmi. Elephants are known to be intelligent beings and these jumbos respond when called by their names.
