Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai For Third Consecutive Day, Trains Delayed, Subways Submerged

Andheri subway was temporarily shut for vehicles due to waterlogging and traffic has been diverted to S V Road, a traffic police official said

Heavy rains in Maharashtra’s Mumbai led to severe waterlogging in several parts of the financial capital bringing the traffic movement to a halt.

Reportedly, several roads have been closed and traffic has been diverted on various routes following the severe rain continued for a third consecutive day giving rise to a waterlogging situation.

Andheri subway was temporarily shut for vehicles due to waterlogging and traffic has been diverted to S V Road, a traffic police official said.

According to the officials, most routes covered by the local trains were operating normally but traffic movement has been significantly affected.

Due to waterlogging, traffic on the road near Sheetal Cinema and Kale Marg, both in the Kurla area, was diverted.

Similarly, traffic on the Aarey route in Goregaon East has been diverted via Seepz-Marol Maroshi-JVLR in both directions, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said.

Chembur Link Road, a busy traffic junction that connects South Mumbai to Thane, reportedly had nearly one-and-a-half feet of water accumulated on the roads due to the consistent downpour.

Mumbai Rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Mumbai received 91 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8 am on Saturday, while its eastern and western suburbs recorded 87 mm and 93 mm of rainfall respectively. The department predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the city.

The Central Railway as well as Western Railway, which operate suburban train services in the Mumbai metropolitan region, said the local services were operating normally on all their routes.

Mumbai and its surrounding areas have been receiving intermittent heavy showers for the last few days.

Alert In Several Districts of Maharashtra

Heavy rains are expected to lash Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan, and Goa regions on Saturday. Besides Mumbai, IMD has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in the state including Pune, Thane, Nashik, and Palghar districts.

IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall in the southern states of Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam during the next two days.
