Gujarat: Student Fails Class 10 Math Exam After Teacher Makes Mistake in Counting Total Marks

After the student submitted his copy for re-evaluation, the Gujarat Board found that a mathematics teacher made an error while counting the total marks

Over 4000 teachers in Gujarat have been fined a total of Rs 64 lakh due to totalling errors made in board exams. A Math teacher who made a totalling error of 30 marks, which led to a student failing the class 10 board exam, too has been fined, reported Times of India.

After the student submitted his copy for re-evaluation, the Gujarat State Education Board (GSEB) found that a mathematics teacher had made an error while counting the total marks. Furthermore, over 100 teachers who had made counting errors of 10 marks or more were math teachers, officials told the news agency.

A total of 1,654 teachers who checked the class 10 board exam papers have been fined Rs 20 lakh for errors in counting marks. For each error in one mark question, teachers have been fined Rs 100. On the other hand, as many as 1,404 teachers who checked class 12 general stream exam papers were fined Rs 24.31 lakh and 1,430 teachers who evaluated class 12 science stream papers have been fined Rs 19.66 lakh total for making errors during totalling of marks, President of the Gujarat Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association Bharat Patel was quoted as saying.

As per the report, several teachers failed to carry forward the marks while doing the total calculation which led to counting errors of over 10 marks. Kiritsinh Mahida, president of the Gujarat Secondary Teachers’ Association stated that some teachers did not round off half marks, such as 2.5 or 5.5, while doing the final calculations, which led to the mistake.

The counting errors came to light after several students submitted their copies for re-evaluation as admission to the next class is based on marks obtained in class 10. “The fines are collected to ensure that the teachers remain vigilant in the marking process,” Dinesh Patel, Vice Chairman of GSEB told the news agency.
