Gig Workers In India To Receive Social Security Under New Government Policy

The central government is working on a significant plan to provide economic security to gig workers, according to Union Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The policy in development aims to offer social security benefits such as pension and healthcare to gig workers, who are typically paid based on individual tasks or projects rather than full-time employment. During a discussion with journalists, Mandaviya highlighted that there are currently an estimated 65 lakh gig workers in India, as per NITI Aayog. With the rapid growth in this sector, the number could exceed 2 crore soon.

As the service sector increasingly shifts to online platforms for consumer convenience, the government is focusing on establishing a social security code for workers engaged in gig and platform-based jobs. Gig workers typically perform temporary roles and are paid per task. These roles can range from employees working for online platforms to those linked to contract firms.

Mandaviya stressed the urgency of addressing the needs of gig workers and ensuring that they are not deprived of their rights while waiting for the implementation of the proposed social security code. He stated that the Labor Ministry aims to introduce this policy before the next budget. The government is actively working on providing social security, including health services or insurance, to gig workers through this new policy framework, and consultations have already begun with various worker groups and organisations.

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasised the new policy under consideration will be legally binding countrywide. This move ensures uniform compliance and widespread benefits for all citizens. One of the significant suggestions put forward is the development of a unique identification number system. This initiative could serve as a tool to streamline the distribution of social security benefits and provide easier access to various government schemes and services.

Mandaviya further stated that the Ministry has been receiving a wide range of proposals and ideas from various stakeholders, all aimed at improving the effectiveness and reach of the policy.
