In a significant boost to rural healthcare, the Firozabad Health Department introduced a new initiative to enhance services for pregnant women. Under this initiative, private surgeons in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad will provide free medical treatment at local government hospitals, eliminating the need for pregnant women to travel to district hospitals for emergency care.
To address the challenges faced by rural women, private doctors will be stationed at Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in villages. These doctors will handle emergencies and perform surgeries as needed, offering round-the-clock care. The Health Department will cover their fees, ensuring that no woman has to be referred to distant hospitals.
Dr Pawan Kumar, Additional Chief Medical Officer of the Firozabad Health Department, explained that this move aimed to reduce the hardships of pregnant women who previously had to travel long distances to access care. In some cases, women would experience complications en route to city hospitals, resulting in serious health risks or even childbirth on the way.
Under the new scheme, private gynecologists will be compensated as follows: Rs 2,000 per operation, Rs 1,000 for travel, and Rs 4,000 for night-time operations. This financial support is intended to ensure the availability of skilled medical professionals around the clock.
In addition to surgical care, the initiative includes providing free ultrasound services. Previously, women faced long waits at government hospital ultrasound centres. To streamline this process, private ultrasound centres have been linked via QR codes. Women will receive a receipt from the hospital, which they can use to access free ultrasounds at these private facilities.
This comprehensive approach is expected to greatly benefit rural women, ensuring timely and effective medical care close to home.
