Festival Of Democracy Or Money Laundering, Asks Delhi High Court On Expenditure, Defacement During DUSU Polls

The comments came after Advocate Prashant Manchanda, the petitioner, brought attention to the rampant defacement of public and metro properties, particularly by candidates contesting the DUSU elections, set for September 26

Is it a festival of democracy or festival to launder money, questioned an anguished Delhi High Court (HC) over the large-scale defacement and expenditure during the elections of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections.

A bench headed by Chief Justice-designate Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela noted that it was high time that the Delhi University Vice Chancellor stepped in. “Do you have any idea how much money is being spent? It is time that the Vice-Chancellor saw it…If they have to annul, they can annul the polls,” said the bench on Wednesday.

The bench also warned that varsity and said, “Either you defer the elections till it gets cleaned up or you remove their candidature and ask for new nominations.”

The harsh comments and concern from the court came after Advocate Prashant Manchanda, the petitioner, brought attention to the rampant defacement of public and metro properties, particularly by candidates contesting the DUSU elections, set for September 26.

The defacement includes damage to bus stands, walls of police stations, university walls, and other public areas, he apprised the court.

Advocate Manchanda highlighted the violation of a previous Delhi High Court judgment in Prashant Manchanda vs. UOI (W.P.(C) 7824 and 8251 of 2017), where the court had framed guidelines to address such defacement issues.

The High Court will continue the hearing on Thursday.
