Extra Marks for Each Tree Planted: How Rajasthan’s Green Drive Is Rewarding Students

The Rajasthan government has mandated that each student in government schools plant five trees.

In celebration of Hariyali Teej on Wednesday, Rajasthan government officially launched its ‘Maha Vriksharopan Abhiyan’, a major tree plantation drive aimed at enhancing greenery across the region. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma inaugurated the campaign, which set an ambitious goal of planting over 2 crore trees throughout the state. The initiative extended to educational institutions, with a particular focus on involving school students to foster environmental awareness from a young age.

The Rajasthan government has mandated that each student in government schools plant five trees. The trees planted will be geo-tagged, with details of the students recorded for accountability. Notably, every student will receive extra marks for each tree that survives until the end of the academic session, as per an order from the education department.

In addition to students, teachers will also be evaluated under this scheme. Teachers who successfully plant and maintain trees for one year will receive marks corresponding to the number of trees they have nurtured. This policy aims to encourage both students and educators to actively participate in the campaign.

The tree planting effort is not limited to schools. All levels of local government, including Panchayat workers, Anganwadi staff, MNREGA workers, Sarpanchs, Gram Sevaks, and Patwaris, are involved in planting and tagging trees at the Panchayat level. The Panchayat has been tasked with the ongoing care of these plants, and dedicated in-charges have been appointed to oversee their maintenance.
