Exploring Mayiladuthurai, The Tamil Nadu District That’s A Filmmaker’s Dream

Mayiladuthurai district has been known widely in Tamil Nadu for being the place where many films have been shot. Due to this fact, the natives feel proud of their district. According to Local 18 Tamil Nadu, one of the films shot here was the Oru Thalai Raagam, directed by EM Ibrahim. It was the debut film of the noted actor and Silambarasan TR’s father, Thesingu Rajendar. Thesingu Rajendar played an uncredited role in Oru Thalai Raagam. Another film that was filmed at this place was the actor Jiiva starrer film Seeru. Only a few scenes of this project were shot in the Mayiladuthurai district.

Rathina Shiva, Seeru’s director was also born in Akkur, a small town in this district. Rathina Shiva directed another film Rekka, headlined by Vijay Sethupathi and shot some of his scenes at the Pearless Cinema Hall in the Mayiladuthurai district. Other scenes were filmed at the Dharumapuram Aadheenam temple and a few other temples in the Mayiladuthurai district. A couple of scenes from the Oru Oorla Rendu Raja starring Vimal and Priya Anand in important roles were filmed at the Mayiladuthurai Junction. It is a major railway station in Tamil Nadu.

Mayiladuthurai derives its name from an ancient legend that states that the divine goddess Parvati changed herself as a peacock. She did this to attract the attention of Lord Shiva with her miraculous dance performance. Mayiladuthurai district was known as Mayurapuram and Mayavaram till the 18th century. According to the historical records, Mayiladuthurai is an ancient city with a historical and cultural legacy spanning thousands of years. It is surrounded by many spiritual sites, including the Navagraha temples, and the famous Pancha Murthy festival rising to the banks of the Cauvery. Mayiladuthurai boasts of being the hometown of Kambar, who wrote one of India’s oldest epics, the Kamba Ramayanam (also called Ramavataram).

As visible in the Local 18 visual, there is a huge tower in the Mayiladuthurai district. The farmers working here have worked hard to maintain its lush green environment. The architectural styles of this district’s churches, temples, etc are also praiseworthy and show the meticulous work of the artists.
