Counting of votes is underway for the assembly elections in Haryana – where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is eyeing a straight third term – and Jammu and Kashmir, which voted in an assembly election after 10 years. In Haryana, the BJP has so far won three seats in the 90-member assembly and is leading in 45. The Congress has also secured three seats and is ahead in 34.
In Jammu and Kashmir’s 90 seats, the BJP has so far won nine, while the National Conference (NC) has secured six and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken one. Available leads show that the BJP is ahead in 20 seats and the alliance of the Congress and the NC is leading in 38.
Jammu and Kashmir voted in its first assembly elections since 2014, first as a Union Territory and first after the removal of Article 370, which gave the erstwhile state special status.
