Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University To Honour Research Students

The objective is to recognise and encourage the contributions made by teachers and students.

The Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University has taken a new initiative to promote research and academic excellence. The university has approved guidelines for Research and Innovation Excellence Awards. The objective is to recognise and encourage the contributions made by teachers and students in research. This step is expected to enhance the research-oriented environment at the university.

Objective: Encouraging students towards research

The Research Excellence Awards were approved in the Executive Council meeting, chaired by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Poonam Tandon. She mentioned that the university is not just a centre of education, but also a hub for creating new knowledge. These awards aim to motivate researchers to conduct high-quality research aligned with global standards, so Gorakhpur University can lead in global research.

Researchers will also be awarded the ‘Excellence in Research Award,’ which will honour scholars who have shown excellence in multiple areas such as publications, patents, and international standards. A cash prize of Rs 21,000 will be awarded under this scheme. The university will provide financial support for filing patents, referred to as seed funding. This initiative is designed to promote innovation and intellectual property.

For the academic year 2024-25, the estimated budget for these awards is Rs 5,06,000. The awards will be presented during the university’s annual Research Day ceremony in February. Prof Tandon emphasised that the university’s goal is to build a strong research and academic ecosystem capable of addressing national and global challenges.

The awards for students are divided into five categories: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Cash prizes will be awarded in each category based on the published research papers. This classification is based on the Quartile Metric System, which classifies research journals into four categories based on their citation impact. Q1 journals are considered top-tier, while Q4 journals fall within the bottom 25%. This system helps researchers assess the quality and impact of their work.

Award Structure and Categories

• Platinum (Q1 Journals, Top 25%): Rs 11,000 per publication

• Diamond (Q2 Journals, Next 25%): Rs 7,000 per publication

• Gold (Q3 Journals, Next 25%): Rs 5,000 per publication

• Silver (Q4 Journals, Bottom 25%): Rs 3,000 per publication

• Bronze (Co-authored paper): Certificate
