The first CM of Delhi is Chaudhary Brahm Prakash of Congress. Elections were held for the first time in Delhi in 1952. Although, after the elections, Deshbandhu Gupta was announced to be made the Chief Minister, he died in a plane crash. After this, Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became the CM of Delhi. He was also a freedom fighter and went to jail many times during the freedom movement.
Chaudhary Brahm Prakas was born on June 16, 1918 and held the post of CM of Delhi from March 17, 1952, to February 12, 1955. He was a resident of Shakurpur, Delhi.
Gurumukh Nihal Singh became the second CM. In the 1952 general election, Sardar Gurumukh Nihal Singh was elected a member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. On May 7, 1952, he also became the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Gurumukh Nihal Singh held the post of Delhi CM from February 12, 1955, to November 1, 1956. He had studied BSc (Economics) from the University of London. After this, in 1920, he was appointed as a professor at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Later, he also became the principal of Shri Ram College, Delhi, in 1950.
The post of Chief Minister of Delhi was abolished in 1956. In 1956, the Delhi Assembly was dissolved and it was declared a Union Territory. In 1966, Delhi was given the status of a metropolitan corporation. In 1991, by amending the Constitution, it was declared a National Capital Territory. After delimitation, the Assembly was reconstituted. In 1991, the 69th Constitutional Amendment approved the formation of a 70-member Assembly for Delhi. In this, 12 seats were reserved for the Scheduled Castes.
After this, when elections were held, Madan Lal Khurana became the Chief Minister of Delhi on December 2, 1993. He remained on this post till February 26, 1996. After Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma of the BJP became the chief minister. He remained CM of Delhi from February 26, 1996, to October 12, 1998. After this, Sushma Swaraj of the BJP was made CM and she remained in this post till December 3, 1998. In the subsequent election, Sheila Dixit of Congress got the command of Delhi. She remained CM here till December 28, 2013.
After Sheila Dikshit, Arvind Kejriwal’s party, the Aam Aadmi Party, which emerged from the Anna movement, came to power and Kejriwal became the new Chief Minister of Delhi. In the 2013 elections, Kejriwal’s party won 28 out of 70 seats and formed the government with the support of Congress, but in just 49 days, he resigned from his post. With this, he also became the CM with the shortest tenure to date, although in the February 2015 elections, he won 67 seats and became CM again. In the next election of 2020, he also won the election and was in the post of Chief Minister till now, but now he has resigned from the post. Now, Atishi of Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has been given the command of Delhi.
