CBI Takes Over Probe Into Death of 3 IAS Aspirants, Files Case Against Coaching Center CEO

CBI has booked the owner of RAU's IAS Circle coaching center's co-owner and CEO Abhishek Gupta under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, voluntary causing hurt and others

The Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday took over the case regarding the death of three IAS aspirants by drowning in the basement of a coaching center in Delhi’s Old Rajender Nagar.

The probe agency has booked the owner of Rau’s IAS Study Circle’s co-owner and CEO Abhishek Gupta under sections of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence, voluntary causing hurt, negligent conduct with regards to pulling down, repairing or constructing building and common intention. CBI has so far, named only one accused in the case.

Three students had died after the basement of the IAS training academy in Old Rajender Nagar was flooded on July 27. Following the tragic incident, Rau’s IAS Study Circle had announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the families of the three UPSC aspirants who tragically drowned when rainwater flooded the institute’s basement.

On July 28, Delhi Police had arrested the academy’s owner and CEO Abhishek Gupta and the coordinator, Deshpal Singh. The two were sent to 14 days of judicial custody.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi sealed 25 basements that were illegally operating as coaching centres, offices, or other commercial entities in different parts of the city from July 28 to July 31. The action was taken against establishments in central Delhi’s Rajinder Nagar and west Delhi’s Patel Nagar and Ranjeet Nagar localities, the report stated.
