Bengaluru Techie in The Soup after Stealing Laptops to Cover Up Tomato Crop Loss

Whitefield Police have arrested Murugesh, a system administrator, for theft. The accused has claimed that he had cultivated tomatoes on six acres of land in Hosur after taking a loan for the farming project. However, the crop failure resulted in significant financial losses

A techie in Bengaluru stole dozens of laptops from his workplace to allegedly cover up the financial losses he had suffered from a failed tomato crop.

Whitefield Police have arrested Murugesh, a system administrator, for theft. The accused has claimed that he had cultivated tomatoes on six acres of land in Hosur after taking a loan for the farming project. However, the crop failure resulted in significant financial losses.

In an attempt to repay his debt, Murugesh began stealing laptops from the company where he had been employed since February this year.

Under the guise of providing laptop service and repairs, he managed to steal several devices. At the end of August, he quit the company and during an audit, the firm learnt about the missing laptops. The company analysed the CCTV footage and discovered that Murugesh was stealing the laptops.

Based on a complaint, the police tracked down the accused to his hometown in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur and recovered the stolen valuables. Murugesh had stolen 57 laptops in total and sold 45 laptops to a repair store in Hosur.

“We have recovered 50 laptops worth 22 lakh rupees. In August he left the company and when the company checked its stores, it learnt about the missing laptops. He had finished his BCA,” said B Dayanand, Bengaluru City police commissioner.

Murugesh, who was arrested on September 9, has been sent to judicial custody.
