CV Ananda Bose directed Mamata Banerjee-led government in Bengal to call an emergency meeting of the cabinet because he believes that the state govt is unable to handle the current law-and-order situation.
CV Ananda Bose, the West Bengal governor, on Sunday directed Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to replace the police chief and summon an emergency cabinet meeting.
The governor believes the state government is unable to handle the current law and order situation in the state.
West Bengal and its capital, Kolkata, along with other major cities has been tense following protests demanding justice and accountability for the trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered last month at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The protests demanding the culprits be nabbed has also rocked other states and state capitals.
CV Ananda Bose has criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state for its handling of the case.
He is on record that the government cannot evade responsibility and remain silent on the disturbing developments in the state, he said.
The governor stated that the state must operate according to the Constitution and rule of law. “The ostrich-like attitude will not pay, and the state must address the public demand to remove the Police Commissioner of Kolkata,” the governor said.
“People should feel that they can expect justice from the government. Now, the feeling is not there,” he said at an event earlier this week.
Meanwhile, people from all walks of life – former students of several educational institutions, clay modellers, rickshaw pullers and junior doctors – separately hit the streets of Kolkata on Sunday in continued protest over the rape and murder of a medic in a state-run hospital a month ago.
Demanding the arrest of all culprits in the case, the mother of the post-graduate trainee whose body was found in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 said she had one child and now all the protesting medics are her children.
In south Kolkata, around 4,000 former students of over 40 schools, a large number of them women, walked a distance of 2 km demanding justice for the victim.
