Bengal Flogging Case: After Targeting Woman’s Character, TMC MLA Unrepentant, Blames Media

When Chopra MLA Hamidul Rahaman came to Kolkata on Wednesday to attend the assembly meeting, neither his body language nor his words reflected any contrition

Nothing, it seems, has changed for Trinamool Congress legislator Hamidul Rahaman. After a chilling video of a couple being thrashed by a man surfaced from north Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district a few days ago, the Chopra MLA had said: “In our Muslim castes there are certain rules, punishments…seems there has been excess in this case. We are talking to locals about it.”

The MLA went on to target the victim woman’s character and still appears unrepentant.

“I have done no wrong. You all have distorted my words. I felt bad for the woman, but she has done something wrong. I have not questioned her character. It was right before everyone’s eyes,” he told the media on Wednesday.

The video of the flogging incident (not verified by News18) is viral on social media and has provoked widespread revulsion and condemnation. The police have till now arrested local strongman Tajimul Islam, alias JCB, and another person named Amirul.

Hamidul is also under the lens after questioning the woman’s honour. Trinamool has issued a show-cause notice to him and he also got a call from party supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

But when the MLA came to Kolkata on Wednesday to attend the assembly meeting, neither his body language nor his words reflected any contrition.

Tajimul tortured the couple with bamboo sticks after they were accused of having an illicit relationship by a kangaroo court. He is a notorious figure in the locality with a history of criminal activities and is said to be a close associate of Hamidul.

On the issue of Tajimul’s arrest, the Chopra legislator told News18 that justice had been done and the police were pursuing more people.
