Australians Fail To Recognise Pat Cummins And Travis Head, Fans Say ‘Cricket Is Dying’

The Australian cricket team has achieved much success in recent times. Starting with their maiden T20 World Cup in 2021, the Kangaroos have lifted three ICC trophies over the past few years. Under the captaincy of Pat Cummins, they won the World Test Championship (WTC) title last year in England before securing their sixth ODI World Cup on Indian soil. However, it seems many people in Australia are not aware of the team’s sheer dominance on the global stage. Recently, a content creator conducted a vox pop in the country where he asked random people about some World Cup-winning Australian cricketers.

The clip opens with the person approaching some passersby in a public place and asking them, “Have you heard of Pat Cummins or Travis Head?” A few of those people ignored the question while the majority failed to recognise the players, who are the key components of the current Australian squad.

One individual knew Pat Cummins and about the Aussie pacer’s leadership quality, he said, “As a captain, he is alright.” Towards the end of the video, an Indian-origin man appeared on the camera. He claimed that he had heard of Virat Kohli but had no idea about Cummins.

Glimpses of the vox pop were shared on X by a cricket enthusiast, who wrote in the caption, “What a shame for ICC, cricket is dying in Australia..” The post created much buzz on the microblogging platforms, with many Indian fans sharing their thoughts on the topic. One of them said, “Seriously like these people know about Virat Kohli but don’t know about their own players.”

“Cricket is only loved in the Indian subcontinent. We love to play a game that’s played by 10 countries. Yes, now we have been able to add 10 more countries after urging over several years. So that we can organise a World Cup and validate ourselves,” wrote a person.

Cricket is only loved in Indian subcontinent. We love to play a game that's played hardly by 10 countries. Yes, now we have been able add 10 more countries after urging over several years. So that we can organise a world cup and validate ourselves. Cricket is only a mid game tbh.— ♟️Yash ⚽ (@JesusMishraa) August 10, 2024

Another user remarked, “There is a saying in Australia that the second most important post after PM is their Cricket Captain. Very surprising to see so many haven’t heard of Pat Cummins.”

A fan reckons cricket is only “loved in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.”

Following their exit from the T20 World Cup earlier this year, Australia have not yet featured in any bilateral assignment. They are slated to play a three-match T20I series against Scotland in September.
