Andhra Pradesh Hospital Sets Up Community Fridge To Reduce Food Waste

Along with the fridge to store food, they have also set up an RO plant to purify water

To alleviate the hunger of the poor, many voluntary organisations conduct various service programs. In Narsipatnam, Anakapalli district, the doctors at Sri Harsha Emergency Care Hospital have come up with a unique idea. They have set up a fridge on the hospital premises to avoid wasting leftover food in the city. They are raising awareness that if anyone has leftover food, they can place it in the fridge. They inform that anyone who is starving can always find food in the fridge at their hospital.

Along with the fridge to store food, they have also set up an RO plant to purify water, providing a great opportunity for anyone thirsty to come and drink water. They suggest that people take the food they like, eat it, and drink the purified water from the RO plant nearby. Dr. Harsha says that this food storage fridge was set up inspired by his parents.

Dr. Mandi Venkataramana, a local eye specialist, says that it is very gratifying to set up this fridge to feed the poor continuously, something not seen anywhere else in the city. He congratulates them, saying that this arrangement to feed the poor is inspirational for everyone. Every day, outsiders bring food and place it in the fridge, and the poor come and take the food. If, at times, outsiders do not bring food, Dr Harsha himself brings food and places it in the fridge. He says that this idea came to them from the perspective of helping the poor. Dr. Harsha mentions that he experienced the idea being implemented at another place and saw the poor taking food from the fridge and eating it. Inspired by this idea, he set up a fridge to feed the poor.

Sri Harsha Emergency Care Hospital is visible on the way from Narsipatnam RTC Complex to Bangarraju Cinema Theater. They have set up this fridge in the hospital premises, informing that if any poor people are hungry, they can take food from the fridge.
