After Telugu Desam Party’s Chandrababu Naidu overthrew Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP in the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections, the fate of volunteers was at stake as many thought the volunteer system, introduced by the YSRCP when it was in power, would be abolished by Chandrababu Naidu’s government.
The YSRCP had also made about 49,000 volunteers resign on the promise of hiring them back once they returned to power. However, with the change of power in the state and rumours of the volunteer system getting scrapped, the resigned volunteers as well as existing ones are in fear.
Now the question remains whether the NDA alliance in Andhra Pradesh will keep or abolish the system. Social Welfare Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy has dismissed reports suggesting that the coalition government plans to abolish the volunteer system. He emphasised that the state remains committed to the promises made in the manifesto.
In his statement, he reassured volunteers to disregard any concerns arising from misinformation spread by individuals with vested interests. He assured that the government would not tolerate any actions that could damage its credibility. The Minister also noted that the previous YSRC administration had exploited the volunteer system for political purposes and had even neglected to renew the contract in the past year. The minister reaffirmed that not only will volunteers be retained but their salaries will be increased as well.
He criticised the YSRC for pressuring volunteers to resign during the general elections to gain political advantage. In contrast, he highlighted that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had provided a clear assurance to volunteers during the election campaign. People’s opinions and suggestions will be considered in this matter. It is known that the TDP alliance had promised to provide volunteers with a salary of Rs 10,000 if they came to power.
