The Uttanahalli Maramma Temple near Mysuru has a rich mythical background. It is believed that the temple is dedicated to Goddess Jwalamukhi, a fierce form of Goddess Parvati, who is worshipped as Goddess Tripura Sundari, an incarnation of the divine feminine power.

Locals believe that when Goddess Chamundeshwari got engaged in the severe battle to slay the demon Mahishasura, a unique challenge arose. It is believed that, as Chamundeswari wounded the demon, a new Mahishasura was born after each drop of the demon’s blood fell on the ground, which made it impossible to defeat it.

To encounter this, Goddess Chamundeswari in created Uttanahalli Maramma from the sweat of her own body. Goddess Maramma a powerful form of goddess, played a significant role in ensuring the victory over the demon. She bulged out her tongue and drank Mahishasura’s blood as it spilt out, preventing any drop of blood from reaching the ground. This stopped the demon from regenerating. Finally, Goddess Chamundeswari was successful at defeating Mahishasura.

In appreciation of Goddess Maramma’s vital contribution, it is believed that Goddess Chamundeshwari herself built a hill around Goddess Maramma in Uttanahalli village, showcasing the sacred Chamundi Hills where Chamundeshwari exists. This gesture was planned to keep her sister, Goddess Maramma, close by, ensuring that she would remain a guardian and protector along with Chamundeshwari.

The temple dedicated to Uttanahalli Goddess Maramma can be reached by climbing 100 steps that lead to the shrine. This ascension is symbolic and offers the devotees a path to seek the blessings of the goddess. Every day, a large number of people visit this site to perform puja to please the deity. The temple showcases the divine bond between the two goddesses and their eternal protection to the entire region.
