700 AI-Based Cameras Installed, Over 10,000 Cops Deployed as Delhi Turns Into Fortress for Independence Day

The Delhi Police has beefed up security arrangements in the city by deploying over 10,000 cops and 3,000 traffic police personnel

Ahead of India’s 78th Independence Day, Rashtrapati Bhavan was seen decked up with lights. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag for the 11th time in a row as a part of the centrepiece annual event where he lays out his government’s agenda, presents its report card, makes important policy and programme announcements and speaks about burning issues.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has beefed up security arrangements in the city by deploying over 10,000 cops and 3,000 traffic police personnel. All borders of the national capital will be sealed for the entry of commercial and heavy vehicles by Thursday midnight apart from heavy police deployment, officials said.

Traffic Restrictions Across Delhi Border

Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for Tuesday in view of the dress rehearsal ahead of the Independence Day celebrations on August 15. As per the advisory, several roads will be closed between 4:00 am and 11:00 am and only labelled vehicles will be permitted on the routes.

According to the police advisory, elaborate law and order and traffic arrangements have been made for the celebrations on August 15.

No heavy transport vehicle (HTV) will be allowed to enter the city on Monday at 10 pm to Tuesday 12 pm and similarly from Wednesday 10 pm to Thursday 12 pm, the advisory stated.

Security Beefed Up Across National Capital

Security has been tightened across India with over 10,000 cops, facial recognition cameras and snipers deployed in Delhi. In Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive year, more than 10,000 police personnel and 3,000 traffic police personnel have been deployed. Mock drills were conducted in VVIP areas on Wednesday, according to officials.

Snipers, elite SWAT commandos, kite catchers and sharpshooters will be positioned at strategic locations for the security of the prime minister and other VVIP guests, a senior officer said.

Additionally, 700 AI-based facial recognition CCTV cameras have been installed in central and New Delhi. These cameras have high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom features, allowing identification of a person from a distance, the officials said.

I-Day Celebrations at Iconic Red Fort

The Red Fort in Delhi becomes the focal point in the days running up to the Independence Day celebrations. Former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave his famous Tryst With Destiny address from the walls of this iconic fort. Following which, it has now become a tradition.

The celebrations will also be broadcast live on PM Modi’s YouTube page and other social media platforms.
