Ahead Of Durga Puja, This Shop In Bengal’s Bardhaman Exports Jamdani Saree To Malaysia

Jamdani saree's price range starts from Rs 2,000 to 30,000.

Jamdani sarees, which have been highly popular in West Bengal for a long time, have now expanded their footprint in Malaysia as well. In an interview with Local 18 Bengal, a weaver named Sushant Dey hailing from the Ghoranas village, Purba Bardhaman district talked about it. He said, “Jamdani sarees are most preferred by Bengalis. I made some special sarees for Puja which I sent abroad to Malaysia.” Sushant Dey is referring to Durga Puja 2024 celebrations. It is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals and will be observed from October 9 to 12, 2024. He added that he received orders from Malaysia with the help of a Bengali friend living there. According to him, before shipping the orders, he sent a picture of one of the sarees designed by him to his friend. Once he received a go-ahead from his friend, Sushant Dey started designing the Jamdani sarees and it took him 3 months to design them.

Jamdani saree’s price range starts from Rs 2,000 to 30,000. With the orders from abroad, the demand for these Jamdani sarees is increasing again. The artists who weave these sarees now have a reason to celebrate before the puja. It is because the Jamdani sarees once used to be one of the most in-demand outfits by women in Bengal. They went out of fashion with time. There were other reasons also for the decline in these saree sales. One of them was the poor condition of the handloom mill. The factories where the Jamdani sarees were manufactured worsened over time. Now, with the West Bengal weavers working again on these sarees, their sales have boosted. The order for Malaysia shipped by another weaver, Sushant Dey from Ghoranas village, is likely to open new opportunities for them.

Jamdani sarees are made by hand embroidering designs on the muslin cloth. The muslin is a plain-woven cotton fabric made in various weights.

As per the Local 18 Bengal, Sushant Dey has woven these sarees with the modest resources available to him. It is brilliant that with no additional manpower and fewer resources, he came up with so many sarees with beautiful designs.
