The CBI has filed a charge sheet against the prime accused, Sanjay Roy, in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, officials said on Monday.
In its charge sheet filed before a special court in Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer with the local police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9 when the victim had gone to sleep in the seminar room of the hospital during a break, they said.
The agency did not mention the charge of gang rape, indicating that Roy alone committed the crime, reported news agency PTI. The CBI has kept the probe open.
At a later stage, the probe agency will file supplementary charge sheets into the role of former RG Kar principal Dr Sandip Ghosh, and then station house officer (SHO) of Tala police station – Abhijit Mondal – in the destruction of evidence and trying to save Roy after the incident. Both Ghosh and Mondal were arrested on September 14.
TMC Reacts To CBI’s Move
Reacting to the CBI’s move, the ruling TMC said that Kolkata Police also arrested key accused Sanjay Roy within 24 hours of the rape-murder incident, criticising the probe agency for the delayed action after one and a half months of the incident.
“Those who wanted CBI, see, in the original rape-murder case, they gave chargesheet only in the name of Sanjay Roy, who was arrested by Kolkata Police within 24 hours. Let them investigate,” wrote TMC leader Kunal Ghosh in a X post.

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked condition in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9.
Sanjay Roy, the sole accused, was arrested by the Kolkata Police on August 10 and sent to police custody till August 24. The investigation was handed over to the CBI on August 13 after directions from the Calcutta High Court.
