‘Threat Culture, Sexual Harassment’: RG Kar Expels 10 Interns, Doctors Amid Concerns Over Safety

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital expelled ten people, including doctors, house staff, and interns, for allegedly threatening students and sexual harassment.

After the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals, the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday expelled ten people, including doctors, house staff, and interns, for allegedly threatening students, physical and mental torture, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and buying drugs and alcohol.

Among the 10 professionals expelled is Ashish Pandey of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who was arrested by the CBI for his alleged role in financial irregularities at the hospital between 2021 and 2024.

The move came after the medical college authorities held a special college council meeting on Saturday and considered a report from the Institutional Enquiry Committee that found the staff and students guilty and decided to expel them until further notice.

Furthermore, the council also forwarded the names of 49 others, charged with sexual harassment against women, to the internal complaints committee of RG Kar for investigation and disciplinary action.

After the horrific incident of rape and murder of a young medic at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, a section of junior doctors who launched a widening protest demanding justice gave written complaints of “threat culture” on the campus.

Acting on the complaint, the RG Kar authorities on September 10 sent notices to several doctors, interns and house staff for allegedly engaging in behaviour that promotes a culture of intimidation. They were called before an inquiry committee. After a hearing and investigation by the inquiry committee, a report was submitted to the college authorities.
