A woman, allegedly being threatened and blackmailed by a man who promised to marry her, threw acid on him at a restaurant in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh

A woman, allegedly being threatened and blackmailed by a man who promised to marry her, threw acid on him at a restaurant in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, the Police said on Saturday, adding that the man is undergoing treatment and the woman has been taken into custody.

The woman, who knew the man from before, met at a restaurant in the morning where after a few minutes of conversation she pulled a bottle out from her bag, opened the cap and threw the liquid (acid) on his face.

The initial investigation revealed that the woman, a divorcee, was promised marriage by the man, but he allegedly subjected her to threats and blackmail.

The victim, identified as Vivek, suffered serious burn injuries in the incident. He fled from the spot before the police could arrive. Meanwhile, the woman was taken into police custody and requested anonymity.

The restaurant management claimed that the woman was sitting inside the restaurant when a man came to visit her. Later, they both ordered food and were engaged in conversation, they said, adding that a few minutes later the woman suddenly pulled out a bottle and threw a liquid on him which she claimed was an acid.

The police said the woman also suffered burn injuries in the incident and medical aid is being provided to her. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mayank Pathak, said they both knew each other and had personal differences.

The police launched an investigation into the matter to find the absconding man and investigate the woman’s claim that she was being blackmailed, he added.
