Retired IAS officer Rohit Kumar Singh, from the 1989 batch, has recently gone viral on social media after sharing a fascinating piece of his past—a job offer letter from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that dates back 40 years. At that time, Singh had just graduated from IIT and applied for a position with TCS. The company offered him a salary of Rs 1,300, which was quite respectable at that time, especially for a job in Mumbai.
Singh shared this nostalgic moment on his social media, flashing a lot of curiosity and engagement. His post has amassed over 2.8 lakh views, with more than 200 people commenting and asking questions about his career journey. The post also attracted around 3,900 likes, showing how his personal story resonates with many. Given the economic landscape at the time, Rs 1,300 was a considerable amount, highlighting how salary structures have evolved over the decades.

Rohit Singh did his graduation in Electrical Engineering from Banaras Hindu University. During this time, when he got his campus placement, Tata Consultancy Services offered him a job in Mumbai. He shared more about his early career experiences on Twitter, reminiscing about his time at TCS and the view of the sea from the 11th floor of Air India’s office at Nariman Point, Mumbai, which he described as “really spectacular.” After his stint at TCS, Singh went to Clarkson University in New York, where he pursued a master’s degree in Computer Science. His career took a significant turn when he passed the UPSC exam and joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), where he was allocated to the Rajasthan cadre. Currently, he is working in the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
