Non-farm jobs under the JMM government stagnated at 50 per cent in 2023-24, down from 57.22 per cent in 2018-19, an NSSO report has stated.
Jharkhand, set to go to polls in 2025, is witnessing rise in unemployment, data shows. During his recent visit to the eastern state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the JMM-Congress-RJD coalition government. Modi said that the Hemant Soren government had stalled the development of the state and its people.
Placement through Employment Exchanges has dropped by a huge number under the present day government. The current JMM government has failed to use transparent mechanisms, such as digital portals and employment exchanges, to promote job creation, sources said. “Placements through employment exchanges fell from 10,450 under the NDA to a dismal 1,420 under JMM. Also there has been a significant dip in registration by job seekers from 4.60 lakh under the NDA Government to 2.04 lakh under the JMM Government,” a report of the Employment Exchange Statistics, Ministry of Labour has stated.
The BJP has come down heavily on the JMM government, accusing it of being a corrupt one. The saffron party, at multiple public programmes and rallies, has said that the corruption buck stops at the doorstep of the Chief Minister himself. Even though many in the party have felt that Hemant Soren was wrongly arrested in a case by the ED, and that the sympathy towards Soren was to reflect in the upcoming assembly polls, the BJP has highlighted that under this present day government, it has been “Na Rahi Naukri, Na Mila Rozgaar” (no job, no employment) tenure.
The saffron party has said that the government in the state has been one which lacked any intent to create meaningful employment, in fact, even resulting in the failure to create jobs under non-farm sectors.

Another set of data released by the Centre also said that during the NDA rule, there was an increase in the employment opportunities in the manufacturing sector, which have also tanked under the current state government. From 2,38,472 jobs in 2018-19 during the NDA rule, employment in the manufacturing sector has reduced to 2,11,954 jobs in 2021-22 under the Soren government, data shows.
Meanwhile, the state ranks at 19 among all states and UTs in terms of the number of registered startups, with just 1,305 startups contributing 0.93 per cent to the total number in India.
The battle for the state of Jharkhand will rage on in the wake of the upcoming state polls. The BJP is fighting the battle head on with JMM. With the focus on winning back tribal votes and support of the others, the BJP is desperately hoping that the 5-year rule of the Soren government, which was marred by scams, will result in a win for them, after the 2019 polls didn’t go their way.
