21-Year-Old Gang-Raped By Three In Maharashtra’s Pune, Male Friend Thrashed

A Pune woman was gang-raped by three men in the Bopdev Ghat area while out with a male friend. The survivor is currently receiving treatment.

A 21-year-old woman was gang-raped by three unknown men in Maharashtra’s Pune. The incident happened late on Thursday when the woman was out with a male friend.

According to the police, the survivor and her friend were in the Bopdev Ghat area when the three miscreants attacked them.

They thrashed the woman’s male friend and gang-raped the woman, at nearly 11 pm. Hours later, the woman’s friend took her to a nearby hospital, where she was undergoing treatment.

The police said the matter was reported to them at nearly 5 am on Friday, and that three people were detained for questioning. They had also recorded the survivor’s statement in the case.

“The survivor and her friend arrived at Bopdev Ghat around 11 pm on Thursday. They were targeted by a group of three individuals who assaulted the man and subsequently attacked the woman,” Pune’s Deputy Police Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma said.

A total of ten police teams were deployed to investigate the incident, and extensive inquiries were underway to track down the perpetrators. Reports indicate that the woman, who is currently undergoing medical treatment for her injuries, hails from another state.

Taking cognizance of the incident, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra spoke to the police commissioner of the city, asking cops to circulate the sketches of the accused.

The police also confirmed both – the survivor and her male friend, are college students.

The incident sparked massive protests outside one of the police stations in the city, demanding justice for the survivor.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Anand Dubey condemned the incident and slammed the Eknath Shinde government in the state, accusing it of being unable to protect the women.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and MP Supriya Sule also expressed her outrage on social media and questioned the safety of women in Maharashtra, slamming the state government’s lack of action to prevent such heinous crimes.

“This is extremely shocking! What is happening in Pune? There has been a reported gang assault on a young woman at Bopdev Ghat. Incidents of violence against women are increasingly becoming common in Pune and across the state. The Home Department appears to be doing nothing to curb these occurrences. Unfortunately, Maharashtra is not a safe place for women. The government must ensure that the perpetrators of this incident are brought to justice and face strict punishment,” Sule wrote in an X post.
