MMRDA To Construct Ring Roads Around Mumbai To Reduce Travel Time To One Hour – Key Details Inside

This extensive Rs 58,000 crore project will involve the construction of over 90 kilometers of new roads, bridges, and tunnels

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced an ambitious plan to alleviate traffic congestion in Mumbai by constructing a network of ring roads around the city.

This extensive Rs 58,000 crore project will involve the construction of over 90 kilometers of new roads, bridges, and tunnels. The core of this large-scale plan also includes seven outer and inner ring roads, currently in various stages of development and tendering.

The aim is to eliminate Mumbai’s traffic bottlenecks by 2029, according to a report by The Indian Express, which has reviewed MMRDA’s comprehensive masterplan for the ring road project.

What Is The Ring Road Masterplan About?

With plans to complete the project within the next five years, the MMRDA will collaborate with various authorities, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on this undertaking.

The report highlighted that the significance of these ring roads lies in their emphasis on enhancing East-West connectivity, an aspect of Mumbai’s infrastructure that has often been neglected. Once finished, these roads are expected to stimulate economic activity in the area.

The ring road project includes key initiatives such as the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, the Versova-Dahisar Link Road, the Alibag-Virar Multi-Modal Corridor, and the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. Together, these roads will form a ring around the city, helping to reduce traffic congestion.

The proposed ring road network will span the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), stretching from the Vadodara border in Gujarat to Alibaug in the southern Konkan region of Maharashtra, and extending towards Navi Mumbai and Thane.

These roads are part of a long-term initiative called “Mumbai in Minutes,” which aims to reduce travel time across the city to under one hour. MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee explained to The Indian Express, “When we say Mumbai in minutes, it should not take more than 59 minutes to travel from one end of the city to the other.”

Mukherjee also emphasised that these projects go beyond merely easing traffic, they are also crucial for transforming the transport landscape of Mumbai and Thane. “With MMRDA, MSRDC, and BMC working together, the future of transportation in Mumbai and Thane looks promising,” he stated.
