Sandip Ghosh’s Close Aide Taken Into Custody After Raids By ED At RG Kar Ex-Principal’s Residence And Other Locations | Updates

Earlier in the week, Sandip Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the medical establishment during his tenure

A team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday morning conducted a raid at the residence of the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar MCH, Sandip Ghosh. Raids were also conducted at the houses of Ghosh’s three close associates by the probe agency. Following the raids, ED took Prasun Chatterjee, a close confidant of Sandp Ghosh into custody from his residence in South 24 Paragana district.

Raids were conducted by ED at seven locations in Kolkata and Howrah in connection with the RG Kar MCH money laundering case.

Earlier in the week, Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the medical establishment during his tenure. On Tuesday, Ghosh was sent to eight days of police custody.

Sandip Ghosh Moves Supreme Court

Sandip Ghosh on Friday moved the Supreme Court challenging Calcutta High Court’s order transferring the RG Kar corruption case to the CBI. The matter is being heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.

‘Serious Miscarriage of Justice’: Sandip Ghosh In SC

Sandip Ghosh’s counsel argued before the top court that linking the incident of rape and murder to him is a “serious miscarriage of justice.”

“I’m aggrieved by the observations…to link me with the rape etc is a serious miscarriage of justice,” he said.

In response, CJI DY Chandrachud said, “It cannot be disputed, you were the principal of the college at that time.”

SC Refuses To Entertain Sandip Ghosh’s Plea

Supreme Court refused to stay the observations prima facie linking Ghosh to the rape case and said, “You were the principal at that time. Your role will be investigated.”

Doctors from BR Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, will conduct medical tests on Sandip Ghosh and three others who were arrested by the CBI in connection with alleged financial irregularities. The medical examinations will be done on Saturday at the probe agency’s anti-corruption branch in West Bengal.

Ghosh was earlier removed from his chair at RG Kar MCH after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the hospital on August 9. The CBI’s Special Crime Branch is probing the rape and murder case while the anti-corruption wing is now questioning Ghosh in the financial irregularities case.

The hospital’s former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali had lodged complaints of financial irregularities on multiple counts at the establishment during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.

Ghosh, who was removed from his chair at RG Kar Hospital after the crime came to light and reinstated in the same position at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital within hours by the Mamata Banerjee government, was subsequently asked to go on an indefinite leave in the wake of massive protests and pending the corruption inquiry.
